Be the reason someone smiles. Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people.

Roy T. Bennett, “The Light in the Heart”

I am currently experiencing writer’s block, which is why this post may seem generic and clichéd. However, I enjoy making lists and always looking for opportunities to create them (my notes and journal are full of them). I was inspired to create this particular list by a few posts on Instagram. While this list may be biased towards things that I would do, there is still a chance that you may find something useful here. Here are some acts of thoughtfulness to brighten the face of your loved ones.

  • Write/Send them a personalized note. This is a classic one, and if they’re people whose love language is words of affirmation, even better. Customize each note to suit each person. I’ve always been big on this one. I don’t know when and how it ceased.
  • Send them a song. Let them know you heard this song and thought of them. You could also share a personal anecdote about the song, and who knows, you might walk down memory lane.
  • Share a reel/meme that you enjoyed and you know they’ll relate to. If you’re someone who loves a good meme, this is another easy way of showing you have them in mind.
  • Make them a hot cup of tea. This will be easy to pull off if you stay in the same place with them. This is a really sweet thing to do especially when they’re ill or just tired or upset. Even better if the person is a tea lover. If not, then maybe some hot chocolate.
  • Remind them of a memorable time you both had some while ago. This might be awkward if you’ve burnt bridges with the person so at best, do this with close friends and loved ones.
  • Treat them to their favourite snack. This can be done anytime or during events/milestones, but then any time will do. If they love ice cream, treat them to an ice cream date. If they love parks/gardens, think along that line. (Be poised for disappointment regarding planning a hangout, though. Everyone is busy these days, and you might likely get no or unavailable. Don’t fret. Get it delivered to them in the comfort of their homes).
  • Lend a listening ear. Sometimes, all a person needs is a listening ear – to be heard,  feel seen, and uplifted. It is a truly amazing thing to have someone give you their time and rapt attention in moments like this.
  • Lend a helping hand. There are so many ways to do this based on the needs of the person.
  • Send them a text to let them know you were thinking of them or simply checking on them.

This list is not exhaustive, and there are so many other things that can be done to show thoughtfulness towards your loved ones. You can make use of their quirks, interests, and preferences to add more depth to your actions. I encourage you to share a few acts of thoughtfulness for your loved ones in the comments section.
