Let me clear the air: I’m not here to share either a sob story or a lovey-dovey story that will make you gag. Alright, folks, grab your chocolates and bouquets. It’s alright if you have none of these; a pack of tissues will do just fine.

A couple of days before Valentine’s Day, I saw a Twitter post where a lady, almost in her 30s, lamented about having never been asked out on Val’s Day. It was both funny and tragic at the same time. After hearing this lady’s story, all I could think was, ‘Same girl, same!’. I told my high school dorm mates that I was going to have my promise/engagement ring at 20. It’s been many moons then.

I’ve never looked forward to Valentine’s Day – there hasn’t been much to anticipate. I never wanted to be wished either. One thing I did so well on such a day was being a spectator. From all the shenanigans in high school and university, I was a spectator. Did I ever question if there was anything wrong with me? Probably.

I remember this one time in my early years of college where I shared champagne with a guy, and in the middle of it, he gave a toast to being ‘good’ friends for a long time. He literally bought the champagne and another gift as well and then proceeded to hit me with the ‘good friends’ speech. Sir, excuse me. Boy, you better stop playing with me. Also, thunder fire you.

I’m here to say if you plan on sitting in a corner doomscrolling social media and getting upset, don’t. ‘We don’t do that here’. Okay, so maybe that’s a little insensitive. You’ve probably been through some heart-wrenching heartache, and this day only reminds you of that, but let’s look at it from a different perspective. February is America Heart Association Month, people! Close your eyes for a few seconds and imagine all the good you’ll be doing your heart if you decide to pop in some ear pods and go for a run.

There are other cardio options such as brisk walking and jump rope. You don’t even have to use a rope. Just jump. Yeah, jump. Your body is going to reward you by giving you that sweet, feel-good hormone—endorphins. You’re going to feel happier lighter. Your heart will be grateful too that you showed it some love.

All the same, if this year you were a part of the Valentine’s Day Spectators Association, you fought the good fight. Well done! This guide should be helpful for next year if you’re still a part of this group. The hope is that you aren’t, but if you still are, we could probably swap some stories like the emotionally stable adults we are. Right?

This post wasn’t in any way meant to poke fun at anyone’s  unfortunate situation. If that were so, I won’t be escaping it either.
